In my presentations to new potential customers, I've seen so many of them view us as "alternative" solutions providers. I love that statement in so many ways. What is "alternative" anymore? I know there was once an "alternative" classification to music, but once that became mainstream, we moved into categories that better defined "different". The point is, alternative has been a word used to define different, out of the norm, which in many ways could make it seem ... weird.

Open source technology is far from weird or different. The open source model allows the ability to understand a solution down to its core and modify it if it doesn't fit the business need. Collaboration, contributions and dedication all allow for true innovation that is well above the norm. Simply put, the term "alternative" paints a picture that a company may be "going out in a limb" if they choose open-source.

In actuality, we open source folks are an advantage. Our advantage is the ability to pick and choose technologies and mold these technologies to fit an existing business model. In more commercialized approaches, businesses must change their ways to fit its new solutions. We have the ability to grow when our clients say "I must grow," not when the next upgrade is available for purchase.

In conclusion, to me it seems far more alternative to adapt a business to purchased software than to adapt the software to an already existing business.
